Parks Intern


An intern for the Parks Division will experience all the aspects of running, managing, and maintaining a large-scale, revenue-generating operation in a park and recreation setting. The intern will effectively serve as a working supervisor at their respective parks/facilities. They will be involved in park-wide and division-wide discussions, gain experience in a variety of issues, take part in the decision-making process, and be expected to voice questions and provide input. The selected candidate will interact with customers, handle suggestions, solve problems, and work with staff to ensure a unique experience for our customers.

Learning Experience


The selected intern will rotate throughout the parks and facilities in order to gain a thorough understanding of the complexity and variety of the Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission. Our facilities include three waterparks, three regional dayparks, three beach parks, campground and cottages, two fishing piers, a marina, an equestrian center, an interpretive center, 19 boat landings, multiple wedding/event venues, and 12 undeveloped properties. The student will gain experience in all aspects of management, including facility operations and maintenance, staff supervision, personnel matters, budgeting concepts and procedures, customer service, capital projects, special events, etc.

Marketing Intern


To observe and contribute to the following marketing assignments:
  • Conduct market research and development of annual marketing plan
  • Support public relations duties by writing press releases, blogs, and articles and assist with TV/radio interview preparation
  • Engage in sponsorship solicitation/account management and park pass ticket sales
  • Contribute to social media content 
  • Participate in promoting and supporting special events
  • Learn about market branding and graphic design concepts
  • Assist with TV commercial production

Food & Retail Intern


The Food & Retail intern will work closely with food and retail managers within a high volume food and retail environment. Duties would include extensive point of sale management that includes inventory valuations, profit analysis, costing out menu items, creating and managing PLU and departments. The intern will work closely with Food and Beverage Managers in daily operation of high-paced concession operations that includes food prep, register operation, placing and receiving food orders, creating daily prep lists, and monitoring food production. Intern will work with food truck staff on daily operations of CCPRC food truck, assist with development and implementation of a multiple week special event at Mullet Hall Equestrian center, manage retail central store by receiving merchandise and filling retail orders, and perform inventory analysis to assure proper inventory levels and profitability. The selected candidate will interact with customers, handle suggestions, solve problems, and work with staff to ensure a unique experience for our customers.

Learning Experience


Selected Intern would receive experience working within a series of select areas including recreational food service management, concessions operations, food truck operations, food service for special events, food management procedures (food and retail costing, ordering, menu design and planning, profit planning), and retail operations. Intern would experience multiple work environments involved in managing and operating food and retail businesses.

Holiday Festival of Lights Intern (Fall 2017)


An intern for the Parks Division will experience all the aspects of planning, implementing, and evaluating a large scale revenue generating operation in a park and recreation setting as it directly relates to the Holiday Festival of Lights, a 53-night special event that draws over 200,000 visitors annually. The intern will effectively serve as a working supervisor throughout the duration of the Holiday Festival of Lights. They will be involved in park-wide and division-wide discussions; gain experience in a variety of issues; take part in the setup, planning, and decision making process; and be expected to voice questions and provide input. The selected candidate will interact with customers, handle suggestions, solve problems, and work with staff to ensure a magical experience for our customers.

Learning Experience


The selected intern will be based out of James Island County Park to effectively learn the complexity and variety of the Holiday Festival of Lights. The perspective and experience gained from what it takes to plan, coordinate, set up, and implement this agency-wide effort is invaluable. The student will gain experience in facility operations and maintenance, staff supervision, personnel matters, budgeting concepts and procedures, customer service, capital projects, special events, etc.
