Poetry at McLeod with Kwoya Fagin Maples

Sunday, October 22, 2017

The poetry series features fellows of the Cave Canem poetery foundation, whose work explores themes associated with the black expereince in America. Charleston native and Cave Canem graduate Kwoya Fagin Maples will read her poetry at McLeod Plantation Historic Site. She will include readings from her collection entitled MEND. Between 1845 and 1849, the inventor of Sim’s speculum performed experimental gynecological surgery on slave women suffering from fistula due to difficult childbirth. This collection is the imagined memories and stories told from the hospital beds by the women who were subjects of his experiments. Maples teaches creative writing at the Alabama School of Fine Arts and directs a three-dimensional poetry exhibit combining poetry and visual art. A light reception and tour follow the reading.
