Situated among a 654-acre site rich in natural, cultural and historical resources, visitors will find CawCawInterpretiveCenter. This land was once part of several rice plantations that flourished during the 1700’s and 1800’s and was home to enslaved Africans who applied their technology and skills in agriculture to carve a series of rice fields out of this cypress swamp.
Still evident are the earthen dikes, remnant water control structures, and visible canals that contribute to the diversity of habitats of migratory waterfowl, songbirds, deer, otter, and alligators.
