Wilderness First Responder & WFR Open Recertification
Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission and Wilderness Medical Associates are offering a Wilderness First Responder and Open Recertification Courses for any individual who enjoy the outdoors and like to be prepared to help others and themselves in a medical emergency. Many organizations require it as part of their job qualifications. It includes all topics covered in the WAFA plus numerous additional topics, case studies, patient assessment drills, and a final simulation. The course is recommended for outdoor professionals as well as outdoor enthusiasts who lead adventure trips and those who are in the backcountry for days or weeks and may have to care for a patient for days.
Classes are fast-paced with an emphasis on practical skills. Mornings are devoted to lectures, while afternoons and evenings are spent outside working on everything from stretcher construction to full-scale rescue simulations. A number of realistic simulations, complete with fake wounds and stage blood, will be conducted. Former students commonly report that real-life rescues “feel just like a simulation.”
Wilderness First Responder (WFR)
Wilderness Medicine differs significantly from standard courses for the urban environment. Learn to deal with medical emergencies when help is miles away and dialing 911 is not an option. If you are an avid outdoor traveler or simply a weekend warrior, Wilderness Medical Associates (WMA) will prepare you for emergencies that involve prolonged patient care, severe environments, and improvised gear. WFR is considered the definitive medical training course for outdoor professionals and enthusiasts. Minimum enrollment is required by January 26.
