Wilderness First Responder & WFR Open Recertification
Image of WFR trainees Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission is sponsoring Wilderness First Responder and Wilderness First Responder Open Recertification courses. These intensive backcountry medical training programs will show students how to deal with medical emergencies when they are miles from help and when dialing 911 is not an option.

Wilderness Medicine differs from traditional first aid in three respects:
  • Transport times are measured in hours and days rather than minutes, so many phases of patient care that usually occur in a hospital must be carried out in the field.
  • Severe environments dramatically increase the complexity of any emergency and heighten risks to patients and rescuers alike.
  • Limited equipment makes improvisation and resourcefulness essential.

These issues and more will be addressed by professional instructors from Wilderness Medical Associates, leaders in the field of wilderness medical training.
Classes are fast-paced with an emphasis on practical skills. Mornings are devoted to lectures, while afternoons and evenings are spent outside working on everything from stretcher construction to full-scale rescue simulations. A number of realistic simulations, complete with fake wounds and stage blood, will be conducted. Former students commonly report that real-life rescues “feel just like a simulation.”

Wilderness First Responder (WFR)
Wilderness First Responder (WFR) is the definitive course in medical training for outdoor educators, guides, SAR team members, and others who work or play in remote areas. The curriculum is comprehensive and practical, including all of the essential principles and skills required to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments. The 5-day format is for individuals and sponsors with less time available for on-site training and requires 25 hours of pre-course preparation. All students must be at least 18-years-old and have completed all pre-course work prior to arrival on course.
