Becoming A Charleston County Lifeguard

Waterpark Lifeguard Requirements  ge of waterpark lifeguards training at Splash Zone Waterpark 
  • Must be at least 16-years-old
  • Complete a standard application for Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission
  • Produce the CCPRC Physician’s Certification signed by a physician
  • Complete an interview with management staff
  • Complete the Starfish Aquatics StarGuard Lifeguard Class
  • Participate in in-service throughout the season
 
Shallow water lifeguards  
  • Swim 100 yards without stopping (front crawl or breast stroke)
  • Swim 10-ft. underwater
  • Retrieve a 10-lb. dive brick from four feet of water and bring it to the pool deck. 
 
Deep water lifeguards (Whirlin’ Waters)

  • Swim 200 yards without stopping in 5 minutes or less (front crawl or breast stroke)
  • Tread water for two minutes without the use of arms
  • Retrieve a 10-lb. dive brick from six feet of water, and bring it to the pool deck.             
In-Service Training
Lifeguards are required to complete 8 hours of in-service training every month to include, but not limited to, Calisthenics, First Aid, Victim Recognition, Victim Transport, Crowd Control, Legal Aspects, CPR, Emergency Procedures, Spinal Management, and Severe Weather.
 
Certifications
Waterpark lifeguards are certified by Starfish Aquatics Institute, through the StarGuard Lifeguard Training.
 
Ocean Rescue Lifeguard Requirements

  • Must be 16-years-old
  • Complete a standard application for Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission
  • Possess a current Lifeguarding certification through the American Red Cross or YMCA.
  • Possess a valid South Carolina drivers license
  • Complete an interview with management
  • Produce the CCPRC Physician’s Certification signed by a physician
  • Complete a physical fitness test to include, but not limited to, 500 meters (550 yards) swim test in nine minutes or less (pool), ten minutes or
    less (open water), and one-mile run in eight minutes or less (track and beach). 
  • Complete all scheduled pre-season trainings, including the Rookie School for first year Ocean Rescue Lifeguards for CCPRC and the Surf School for all Ocean Rescue Lifeguards
  • Pre-season Training Requirements and Dates 
In-Service Training
Lifeguards must attend the in-service training held after work once a month during June and July.
 
Weekly Training Requirements
  • Run five miles
  • Swim 1,600 yards
  • Paddle 1,600 yards on the paddleboard
  • Kayak 1,600 yards
  • Practice spinal immobilization and rescue techniques for 30 minutes
  • Practice Adult, Child, and Infant CPR at least twice a week for a total of no less than 30 minutes in each category
  • Practice the use of the AED, Oxygen, Suction, and First Aid for a total of no less than 30 minutes each week
Be aware that practice rescues and drills will be held regularly. Each situation should be addressed as if it were an actual rescue.  
 
Certifications

Link to South Atlantic Lifesaving Association 

  • Certified Lifeguard Agency with the United States Lifesaving Association since 1994. Associated Region South Atlantic.
  • Every Ocean Rescue Lifeguard is certified to the level of a South Carolina Department of Transportation Emergency Medical Responder or higher.
