Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS
| The Wilderness Medicine Institute (WMI) of the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) teaches students to handle medical emergencies in remote environments. Their instructors have a combination of patient care experience, wilderness expedition experience, and teaching experience. They don't just teach from a book, they teach from experience, and they are passionate about what they do. |
Bites, Barbs, Marine Stings & Their Treatments
Eventually, the creepy crawlies are going to find you. It may be jellyfish in the water, a stingray while loading your boat, or coming across a venomous pit viper or scorpion at the edge of one of your camps. This entertaining and informative presentation will debunk the myths of treating bites and stings. Be ready, it’s a jungle out there, and you want to be sure your teeth are the only ones doing the chewing. |
Lightning Along Our Waterways – Precautions & Emergency Response
Be sure that you aren’t “overcharged” for your paddling adventures! Whether you are on the coast, a wide river, expansive lake, or tucked in securely at camp, during heavy weather, we are always exposed to lighting hazards. Here’s your chance to learn more about lighting, and then use that knowledge to make better decisions both on the water and in camp. Given the worst case scenario, you will also learn the proper emergency response to lightning injuries. |
Prevention & Treatment of Heat Illnesses, Hypothermia, & Cold Shock
When paddling, we rarely have “baby bear” days. It’s usually too hot, or too cold and hardly ever “just right”. Most of us are adept at dressing for the conditions, but what if it’s not enough? Or what if one of our group members or someone from another party is not prepared for the environmental conditions of the day? Using real life incidents, we will examine signs, symptoms, and treatment for a continuum of cold and heat related injuries. Ample time will be allotted for discussion and questions throughout the presentation. |
