Enrich Your Summer Camp

Enrich the experience of your summer campers without leaving your site, or incorporate learning into a day at the park with exciting programs offered by professional naturalists and historians. Choose experiences for your campers that explore the mysteries of nature, relive the history of the Lowcountry, or challenge them to climb to new heights! Space is limited, so book your programs early. Programs are appropriate for youth ages 6-12 and are available at your county parks. Select programs may be brought to your camp. 2013 Summer Camp Enrichment Programs
Pond Poking 
Beetles that utilize SCUBA skills and underwater dragonfly larva with harpoon-like jaws are just a few of the surprises waiting for campers as they survey a freshwater pond by using dip nets to capture insects, fish, and amphibians before releasing them.
  • Program Length: 30 minutes
  • Locations: James Island County Park and Palmetto Islands County Park
  • Fee: $50.00 per group of up to 25 campers
Secrets in the Sand
You have heard of digging for clams but have you heard of clams digging? Thousands of animals live beneath and between the sand grains. We use trowels and strainers to discover them and release them unharmed.
  • Program Length: 30 minutes
  • Locations: Isle of Palms County Park and Kiawah Beachwalker Park
  • Fee: $50.00 per group of up to 25 campers 
Seining the Sea
You would be surprised to discover what’s swimming, crawling, and floating by you at the beach! We pull a huge net through the surf to catch fish, crabs, jellies, and other sea life to observe and later release.
  • Program Length: 60 minutes
  • Locations: Isle of Palms County Park and Kiawah Beachwalker Park
  • Fee: $80.00 per group of up to 25 campers 
Barrier Island Ecology
Campers study the relationships between organisms and their environment on a barrier island. Participants build barrier islands of sand, collect animals in the swash zone, and use a seine net to collect fish in the ocean. Through these activities, your budding ecologists gain an understanding about the ties that link living things with their environment.
  • Program Length: 90 minutes

  • Fee: $90.00 per group of up to 25 campers 
Carolina Gold 
How do you turn swamps into marshes? How did Africans make European South Carolinians some of the richest people in the world? Join us as we investigate the role of Africans and later African Americans in the growing and milling of Carolina Gold rice.
  • Program Length: 60 minutes
  • Locations: Caw Caw Interpretive Center
  • Fee: $80.00 per group of up to 25 campers
Indigo 
Discover the mysteries and power of indigo and how locals have used this plant to heal, protect, and make the world a more colorful place. Bring a t-shirt to dye.
  • Program Length: 60 minutes
  • Locations: Caw Caw Interpretive Center
  • Fee: $90.00 per group of up to 25 campers 
Native Americans of Coastal South Carolina 
What do oyster shells, deer shoulder blades, and animal tissue have in common? These are a few of the natural resources campers examine as they learn how Native American tribes used them to meet their needs prior to European arrival.
  • Program Length: 60 minutes
  • Locations: Caw Caw Interpretive Center or Kiawah Beachwalker Park
  • Fee: $80.00 per group of up to 25 campers
Insects 
It has six legs and its skeleton is on the outside; what is it? An insect of course! Enter the miniature yet mesmerizing world of insects as we learn about their characteristics.
  • Program Length: 60 minutes
  • Locations: CCPRC parks or your camp location
  • Fee: $80.00 per group of up to 25 campers at a park or $90.00 for outreach 
Earth Heroes 
With a population around 7 billion, humans can have quite an impact on the environment we all share. Learn about natural resource use, land development, and ways you can make a difference to keep our home planet healthy.
  • Program Length: 60 minutes
  • Locations: CCPRC parks or your camp location
  • Fee: $80.00 per group of up to 25 campers at a park or $90.00 for outreach
Animal Detectives
We can find out a lot about an animal without ever seeing it! Learn to recognize important skull features, follow a set of footprints through the woods, and figure out an animal’s diet by what it left behind. 
  • Program Length: 60 minutes
  • Locations: CCPRC parks or your camp location
  • Fee: $80.00 per group of up to 25 campers at a park or $90.00 for outreach
Water, Water, Water & More Water
The water that flows from the mountains to the sea connects us all. Explore South Carolina watersheds, how humans impact water, and how water impacts us. 
  • Program Length: 60 minutes
  • Locations: CCPRC parks or your camp location
  • Fee: $80.00 per group of up to 25 campers at a park or $90.00 for outreach
