Early Morning Bird Walks

at Ravenel Caw Caw Interpretive Center

December 29

49 species were seen and/or heard on a mild, cloudy, breezy day with rain by 11am.  The most interesting were 2 Black-bellied Whistling Ducks, 6 Hooded Mergansers, 1 Red-breasted Merganser, 1 Cooper's Hawk, 2 King Rails, 3 Eastern Bluebirds, 2 Blue-headed Vireos, and 1 Chipping Sparrow.

 

December 22

56 species were seen and/or heard on a cool, cloudy, breezy, ok day.  The most interesting were 1 Northern Harrier, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 4 Clapper Rails, 1 King Rail, 1 Sora, 2 Marsh Wrens, 3 Hermit Thrushes, 2 Blue-headed Vireo, 1 Yellow-throated Warbler, 1 Pine Warbler, 2 Palm Warblers, and 4 Chipping Sparrows.

 

December 26

48 species were seen and/or heard on a cool breezy, cloudy, ok day.  The most interesting were 6 Hooded Mergansers, 2 Northern Harriers, 2 Soras, 2 House Wrens, 5 Marsh Wrens, 1 Golden-crowned Kinglet, 3 Hermit Thrushes, 5 Blue-headed Vireos, 1 Yellow-throated Warbler, and 1 Black-and-white Warbler.

 

December 15

64 species were seen and/or heard on a cool, breezy, cloudy, nice day. The most interesting were 8 Hooded Mergansers, 1 second year Bald Eagle, 1 Northern Harrier, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 1 Cooper's Hawk, 1 Sora, 5 Wilson's Snipe, 1 House Wren, 2 Sedge Wrens, 6 Marsh Wrens, 15 Eastern Bluebirds, 1 Hermit Thrush, 1 White-eyed Vireo, 3 Blue-headed Vireos, and 12 Field Sparrows.

 

December 19

53 Species were seen and/or heard on a 44-65 degree day that turned warm and sunny.  The most interesting were; 15 Green-winged Teal, 10 Hooded Mergansers, 1 Wilson's Snipe, 4 Hairy Woodpeckers, 2 House Wrens, 1 Marsh Wren, 3 White-eyed Vireos, 1 Blue-headed Vireo, 1 Ovenbird, 4 Chipping Sparrows, and 6 Field Sparrows.

 

December 12

53 species were seen and/or heard on a cool, clear, turn warm nice day. The most interesting were; 1 second year Bald Eagle, 1 Northern Harrier, 1 Cooper's Hawk, 1 Sora, 2 Wilson's Snipe, 2 House Wrens, 1 Sedge Wren, 3 Marsh Wrens, 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, 1 Hermit Thrush, 2 White-eyed Vireos, 4 Blue-headed Vireos, 2 Chipping Sparrows,  and 1 Rusty Blackbird.

 

December 8

60 species were seen and/or heard on a cool, breezy, partly cloudy turning warm day.  The most interesting were;  1 Wood Stork, 5 Blue winged Teal, 25 Hooded Mergansers, 1 Osprey, 1 second year Bald Eagle, 2 Northern Harriers, 1 King Rail, 2 Soras, 1 House Wrens, 3 Marsh Wrens, 1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, 4 Hermit Thrushes, 1 White-eyed Vireo, 6 Blue-headed Vireos, 1 Orange-crowned Warbler, 1 Black-and-white Warbler, and 1 Dark-eyed Junco.

 

December 1

52 species were seen and/or heard on a cool, breezy, clear, turning nice day. The most interesting were 20 Hooded Mergansers, 1 second year Bald Eagle, 2 Northern Harriers, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 3 Cooper's Hawks, 2 Soras, 1 Wilson's Snipe, 2 House Wrens, 1 Golden-crowned Kinglet, 3 Hermit Thrushes, 3 Blue-headed Vireos, 3 Black-and-white Warblers, and 6 Dark-eyed Juncos.

 

November 28

51 species were seen and/or heard on a cool, breezy, clear turning mild day. The most interesting were;  25 White Ibis, 2 Wood Storks, 22 Hooded Mergansers, 1 Osprey, 2 second year Bald Eagle, 2 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 1 Cooper's Hawk, 2 House Wrens, 1 Sedge Wren, 2 Marsh Wrens, 4 Eastern Bluebirds, 4 Hermit Thrushes, 3 Blue-headed Vireos, 3 Dark-eyed Juncos, and 4 Rusty Blackbirds.

 

November 24

61 Species were seen and/or heard on a cold, windy, partly cloudy, ok day. The most interesting were 1 White Ibis, 2 Wood Storks, 2 Wood Ducks, 20 Green-Winged Teal, 15 Blue-winged Teal, 30 Hooded Mergansers, 1 Osprey, 1 second year Bald Eagle, 1 Northern Harrier, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 1 Cooper's Hawk, 1 Sora, 1 Wilson's Snipe, 1 White-breasted Nuthatch, 2 Sedge Wrens, 1 Marsh Wren, 1 Golden-crowned Kinglet, 10 Hermit Thrushes, 60 American Robins, 3 Blue-headed Vireos, 1 Pine Warbler, 1 Black-and-white Warbler, an 1 Rusty Blackbird.

56 species were seen and/or heard on a cool, sunny, breezy, turn hot day, The most interesting were 4 Wood Ducks, 1 Northern Harrier, 1 Cooper's Hawk, 1 Wild Turkey, 1 Sora, 3 Wilson's Snipe, 2 House Wrens, 6 Hermit Thrushes, 1 Blue-Headed Vireo, 2 Pine Warblers, 6 Dark-eyed Juncos, 3 Field Sparrows, and 25 Rusty Blackbirds.

 

November 17

50 species were seen and/or heard on a frosty, clear, light breeze, turn

warm nice day.  The most interesting were 12 Anhingas, 1 American Bittern, 4 Green-winged Teal, 1 Hooded Merganser, 1 Northern Harrier, 1 Virginia Rail, 1 Sora, 7 Wilson's Snipe, 3 house Wrens, 1 Sedge Wren, 1 Blue-headed Vireo, 2 Chipping Sparrows, and 1 Field Sparrow.

 

November 14

47 Species were seen and/or heard on a cool, sunny, turn warm day.  The most interesting were 1 Anhinga, 1 American Bittern, 2 Ring-necked Ducks, 2 Bald Eagles, 1 Northern Harrier, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 5 Belted Kingfishers, 1 Hairy Woodpecker, 2 Hermit Thrushes, 3 Blue-headed Vireos, 1 Black-and-white Warbler, and 5 Dark-eyed Junco's.

 

November 10

50 species were seen and/or heard on a cool, breezy, clear, nice day.  The most interesting were 2 Blue-winged Teal, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 1 Cooper's Hawk, 2 Clapper Rails, 1 King Rail, 1 Sora, 2 House Wrens, 4 Hermit Thrushes, 2 Blur-headed Vireos, 1 Pine Warbler, 1 Palm Warbler, 1

Black-and-white Warbler, and 10 Rusty Blackbirds.

 

November 7

43 species were seen and/or heard on a cold, breezy, clear, turning ok day. The most interesting were 1 osprey, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 3 Wilson's Snipe, 5 Phoebes 1 eating an Anole, 1 Marsh Wren, 1 Golden-crowned Kinglet, 2 Hermit Thrushes, 1 Blue-headed Vireo, 1 Palm Warbler, and 1 Chipping Sparrow.

 

November 3

63 species were seen and/or heard on a cool, breezy, clear nice day.   The most interesting were 1 Wood Stork, 3 Mottled Ducks, 40 Blue-winged Ducks, 1 Young Bald Eagle, 2 Northern Harriers, 2 Cooper's Hawks, 5 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, 2 House Wrens, 1 Marsh Wren, 5 Ruby-crowned kinglets, 3 Golden-crowned Kinglets, 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, 30 Eastern Bluebirds, 2 Hermit Thrushes, 60 American Robins, 6 Blue-headed Vireos, 5 pine Warblers, 1 Palm Warbler, 5 Eastern Towhees, 1 Dark-eyed Junco, 1 Savannah Sparrow, 200 Swamp Sparrows. 50 Song Sparrows, 15 White-throated Sparrows, and 1 American Goldfinch.

51 species were seen and/or heard on a cool, cloudy, turning clear nice day. The most interesting were 1 Wood Stork, 10 Wood Ducks, 20 Green-winged Teal, 1 Mottled Duck, 100 Blue-winged Teal, 1 American Kestrel, 1 Sora, 3 House Wrens, 15 Eastern Blue Birds, 1 White Eyed Vireo, 3 Blue-headed Vireos, 500 Yellow-rumped Warblers, 1 Pine Warbler, 30 Palm Warblers, 1 Eastern Towhee, 3 Savannah Sparrows, 30 Swamp Sparrows, 5 Song Sparrows and 5 White-throated Sparrows.

62 species were seen and/or heard on a cloudy, clearing, cool nice day.  The most interesting were 7 White Ibis, 1 Wood Stork, 1 Northern Harrier, 2 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 1 Cooper's Hawk, 2 Wild Turkeys, 5 Clapper Rails, 2 Soras, 4 Greater Yellowlegs, 1 Yellow-billed Cuckoo, 1 Chimney Swift, 1 White-eyed Vireo, 1 Blue-headed Vireo, 2 Northern Parula Warblers, 2 Black-and-white Warblers, 1 American Redstart, 1 Savannah Sparrow, 30 Swamp Sparrows, and 8 Song Sparrows.

46 species were seen and/or heard on a warm, partly cloudy, breezy, muggy day.  The most interesting were 1 Spotted Sandpiper, 1 Wood Pewee, 1 Willow Flycatcher, 1 Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, 2 House Wrens, 3 Marsh Wrens, 30 White-eyed Vireos, 6 Red-eyed Vireos, 15 Northern Parula Warblers, 1 Black-throated Blue Warbler, 40 Palm Warblers, 8 Prairie Warblers, 1 Oven Bird, 4 Northern Waterthrushes, 15 American Redstarts, and 30 Indigo Buntings.

39 species were seen and/or heard on a muggy, cloudy day with the birds hard to find.  The most interesting were, 5 Least Bitterns, 2 Yellow-crowned Night Herons, 1 Mississippi Kite, 2 Ospreys, 1 Solitary Sandpiper, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, 1 Yellow-billed Cuckoo, 2 Belted kingfishers, 2 Purple Martins, 6 Indigo Buntings, and 3 Painted Buntings.

51 species were seen and/or heard on a warm, humid turn hot day.  The most interesting were; 4 Least Bitterns, 1 yellow-crowned Night heron, 1 Wood Stork, 12 Mississippi Kites, 2 Swallow-tailed kites, 2 Ospreys,  1 lesser Yellowlegs, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, 10 Least Sandpipers, 2 Yellow-billed Cuckoos, 2 Belted Kingfishers, 6 White-eyed Vireos, 2 indigo Buntings, and 9 Painted Buntings.
