Classroom & Demo Sessions
The Ins & Outs of the Surf Zone
Going through the surf zone is a necessary part of most sea kayaking. However, for many people it produces anxiety, and for good reason. Before entering the surf zone there are many questions that should be asked and answered. This presentation will focus on the techniques, strategies and information one should have to make the surf zone a comfortable and even enjoyable experience. There will also be a demonstration of flat-water drills that simulate the surf experience.
Your Boat, Your Body, & Your Blade
Paddling a kayak is more than just taking strokes with your paddle. Kayaking is a true marriage of your boat, body and blade, where all three must be working together during all aspects of kayaking. We will discuss body position and movements, boat positions and movements, and closely view how to properly use and manipulate your paddle to get the results you want. This class is done in the lecture room so you can see what is happening under the water and inside the kayak, as we look at your body, boat, and blade working together.
Touring Paddle Forum
Leading paddlers discuss and compare the different paddling styles found among touring kayakers. The discussion (often quite spirited) will feature the merits of, and appropriate applications for racing wings, traditional Greenland blades, and the most commonly seen Euro-style paddles. Although ubiquitous, the paddle is probably the least well known part of sea kayaking. Each style has its proponents, and after the discussion with many examples drawn from personal experiences, you’ll have an excellent overview of all styles, as well as a deeper comprehension of how to make your own paddling style most efficient.
Learning & Practicing Good Judgment on the Water
If you find yourself in a kayaking emergency, do you think you will show good judgment? If not, do you think someone else can really teach you good judgment? This presentation will examine good/bad judgment and the decision making process. We will also discuss the steps one can take that will help guide you toward quality decision making in the future. Part of this presentation will entail reviewing emergency scenarios.

The Art of Maneuvering your Kayak
The shortest distance between two points is a straight line....except in kayaking. The main reason most people paddle their kayak is to get to a destination. Your strokes move your kayak, but knowing how to put the different strokes together to stay on course is another matter. There are many different strategies one can use to stay on course or to get back on course. This class will explore a number of strategies to help you maneuver efficiently, especially on windy days.
