The Climbing Wall
The Climbing Wall at James Island County Park is one of the Lowcountry’s tallest outdoor climbing facilities. Our 50-foot wall features more than 4,500 square feet of climbing space, including 14 top ropes and two lead climbing walls. The Climbing Wall offers challenges for every climber, regardless of experience. Our qualified staff are available to assist with the technical safety procedures for all ages and abilities, and The Rock Shop carries top-quality products and brands to meet all your climbing needs.
COVID-19 Protocols
What You Can Do
- Climbing is currently available by preregistration only.
- Bring your own equipment, or sign up to rent a harness from us (a limited number of harness rentals will be available per day and customers must purchase a rental online prior to their session).
- Bring a mask that covers your mouth and nose. In the first phase of opening, while you climb or anytime you are within six feet of people it is required. This protects your fellow climbers because breathing on handholds is inevitable. We hope to maintain a supply of masks but can’t guarantee we will have one to sell or give you.
- Bring a filled water bottle. Water fountains will not be available.
- Use only liquid chalk which will be provided free of charge.
- Expect there will be no instruction or orientations to first-time customers that will require staff to break the six-foot social distancing rule.
- Use only auto belays on the Climbing Wall. The Bouldering Cave will also be available.
- Be patient with staff and each other.
- Maintain good social distancing of six feet at all times and wash or disinfect hands frequently including washing hands before entering the facility.
- Avoid entering the Climbing Wall if you have been exposed to COVID-19 in the last two weeks or have a fever or other symptoms consistent with COVID-19.
Scheduling a Time Slot
To keep everyone safe, you will sign up for a time slot prior to showing up to climb. Climbers will be able to sign up for a single two-hour time slot per day. During our initial reopening phase, we will have the following time slots available:
- Mon-Fri: 12-2, 2:15-4:15, 4:30-6:30
- Sat-Sun: 10-12, 12:15-2:15, 2:30-4:30, 4:45-6:45
Time slots may be canceled due to weather concerns. We will contact you if this occurs, so please be sure we have current contact information associated with your account.
Reserving a Harness
If you need to reserve a harness from us, you must do so prior to arriving to climb, as availability is limited.
What Our Staff Will Do to Minimize Risk
- Sanitize frequently touched surfaces (keypads, counters, phones, etc.).
- Sanitize auto-belay tethers and carabiners in between each time slot
- Prescreen through symptom and temperature checks prior to starting their shift each day
- Wear masks at all times and practice social distancing
- Give climbers a 30-minute warning before your time period ends.

Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Years Day. Inclement weather and some park events may cause additional closures.
- Climbing Fees Daily Pass: $12
- Shoe rental: $2 (street shoes allowed)
- Harness rental: $3
- Chalk bag: $1 (optional)
- Belay card: $5 (classes held monthly)
Annual & Monthly Passes
Passes are non-transferable photo IDs that offer free climbing at the Climbing Wall and free entrance into James Island County Park for either one year or one month from date of issue.
- Purchase Annual Climbing Pass: $330 + tax
- Purchase Auto-Renewing Monthly Climbing Pass: $38 per month + tax.
Youth 12 & under and seniors 60+ receive a 20% discount on annual and monthly pass that will be applied in cart. Pass must be presented to be scanned for admission; receipt of purchase is not valid for entry.
The Climbing Wall at James Island County Park is currently open to climbers who are able to bring their own gear.
You must sign up for your climbing spot online, and read through our guest guidelines.
All climbers must have an current year Activity Waiver, and climbers under age 18 must have it completed by a parent or legal guardian. All belayers must have a valid CCPRC Belay Card or pass our belay test in order to belay. Belayers must be at least 14 years old unless participating in a CCPRC instructional program.
