In the autumn and winter of 1865-1866, small pox raged across James Island killing an estimated 48% of the population. While Dr. Charles Brownley of the Freedman's Bureau hospital at McLeod Plantation worked to treat the disease, many freed people relied on healing traditions passed down from their ancestors. Explore remedies residents may have used to treat this lethal disease and other ailments, and discover how disease and medicine affected freed people at the dawn of freedom.
