McLeod Poetry Series: Glenis Redmond

Sunday, April 28, 2019

Glenis Redmond is Poet-in-Residence at The Peace Center for the Performing Arts in Greenville, SC, and the State Theatre in New Brunswick, NJ and is a Kennedy Center Teaching Artist. Among her awards are a Cave Canem fellowship, the Nazim Hikmet Poetry Festival competition, and the Plattner Award. In this innovative series African American poets reclaim the plantation landscape by exploring the past, present, future and the imagined in their own voices. Often representing pain and suffering and survival and perseverance, these poets confirm that plantations are places of conscience. One poet recalled, "Reading poems where my ancestors were was a return. On their behalf I was returning with power. It belongs to them. I would be a part of reclaiming it."
