McLeod Poetry Series: Roger Reeves

Sunday, June 9, 2019

Roger Reeves' poems have appeared in Poetry, Ploughshares, American Poetry Review, Boston Review, and Tin House. He was awarded a 2013 NEA Fellowship, a Ruth Lilly Fellowship by the Poetry Foundation in 2008, two Bread Loaf Scholarships, an Alberta H. Walker Scholarship, and two Cave Canem Fellowships.

In this innovative series, African American poets reclaim the plantation landscape by exploring the past, present, future, and the imagined in their own voices. Often representing pain, suffering, survival, and perseverance, these poets confirm that plantations are places of conscience. One poet recalled, "Reading poems where my ancestors were was a return. On their behalf I was returning with power. It belongs to them. I would be a part of reclaiming it."

No preregistration necessary. This activity takes place outdoors.

This series is funded by the South Carolina Humanities Council, a not for profit organization inspiring, engaging, and enriching South Carolinians with programs on literature history, culture and heritage.
