Gumbo Tales: Stories and Foodways of Zora Neale-Hurston

Enjoy a bowl of gumbo, celebrate Women's History Month, and learn the unique history of writer, anthropologist, and food historian Zora Neale-Hurston. Storyteller and food historian Julian Gooding will share stories inspired by the tales Zora archived and his recipe for a gumbo that celebrates the American south and the Caribbean culture Zora loved and cherished.

Ages 16 years and up. We are not able to accommodate food allergies in this program. Due to space constraints, if you register for this program and are unable to attend, please withdraw and allow others to participate. Pre-registration is strongly recommended to guarantee you have a spot.

What to expect: This program will take place at the McLeod Plantation Historic Site Pavilion where seating is available for all participants. The program will take place outside in a shaded area. A small, tasting portion of food will be provided to each participant. A list of ingredients will be available during the program. McLeod Plantation Historic Site has accessible parking, restrooms, water fountains, and picnic tables. Trails throughout the property are of a natural, unpaved surface.

Thanks to the generous support of the Charleston County Parks Foundation, this program is free. Pre-registration is strongly recommended to guarantee you have a spot.
