Fall meant harvesting cotton for the majority of James Island's residents during and after slavery. Thought to be extinct, the distinctive Sea Island cotton has been rediscovered, and the first crop in nearly one hundred years is growing here! Learn more about the plant and its history.
Activities include a Sea Island cotton tour with Dr. Richard Porcher, a Sea Island cotton art exhibition by Gullah Artist Sonja Griffin Evans, Sea Island cotton activities for children, and more.
